How to Purify Water for Your Home in 5 Simple Steps

The tap water in your home is contaminated with harmful chemicals like chlorine, fluoride, mercury, and even lead. If you regularly drink from the tap, your body may be accumulating these chemicals, which could lead to health problems down the road.

This is why it’s so important to only drink filtered, or purified water. When you purify water, you filter out all of those dangerous chemicals and you’re left with good old H2O.

Read on to find out how to purify water in your home so you can keep your body healthy and hydrated.

1. Boiling Water

Boiling water for 10 minutes or more will kill most or all of the pathogens and chemical contaminations. If you don’t have a water filter, this is the easiest and most straightforward way to purify your water.

But it would be extremely time-consuming to boil all of your drinking water every day, which is why this method should really only be used for cooking. For example, if you’re making pasta, you can feel comfortable using water straight from the tap because when you boil it, the pathogens will be killed off.

2. Filtration

Filtering your water is easy and can be done very quickly, so it’s a great option to purify your everyday drinking water. All you need to do is by a water filter that can catch the chemicals and leave you with pure water.

You can buy a filter attachment for your sink that just screws onto the faucet. Or, you can buy a container, such as a Brita, that you pour tap water into and it filters before going into the pitcher. Just make sure you change out the filters every 40 gallons or so.

3. UV Water Purification

There’s some incredible technology that uses UV rays to purify water by attacking the harmful pathogens in tap water.

The UV lamp rays can kill off the chemicals without adding anything to the water. This makes it a safe and eco-friendly way to treat hard water at home so you can drink clean water.

4. Distillation

You’ve surely heard of distilled water, but what does it actually mean when water is distilled? Distillation uses evaporation and condensation to separate water impurities from H2O, leaving you with clean, safe water to drink.

You’ll need home distilling equipment, but once you get that set up you won’t have to worry about your water anymore. You won’t need to change out filters like you would with the filtration process.

5. Using Chemicals

It may seem counterintuitive to clear your water of chemicals using more chemicals, but it’s actually effective. You can use chemicals like iodine to clean and purify the water so it’s safe to drink.

Chemicals can take a while to purify water, however, and many people don’t like the idea of adding more chemicals to their water even if it’s considered safe.
