Having clean water to drink is something many people may take for granted. While it may seem like an involved process, there are some easy methods you can try that may help clean up your water supply a bit.

From boiling to iodine drops all the way to UV irradiation, there are hundreds of things to try.

If you’d like to learn more on how to purify water, keep reading.

1. Boil

We’ve all seen boil water advisories on local news sites every now and then. Ultimately what this means is that at some point in the water purification process, the water has been contaminated. Or it hasn’t been cleaned enough for human consumption.

If you are trying to get your water clean, boiling it will be the easiest way to get it pure enough to cook and drink.

2. Get Some Iodine

Iodine has been used to purify water for years. In WWII iodine tablets were standard issue for American troops stationed around the world. Iodine acts as a disinfectant and to this day is one of the easier potable water purification methods there are.

3. Water Chlorination

Bleach or chlorination can be used in emergency situations to purify water. Add one teaspoon for every 20 liters of water. Let the water rest for a few hours and keep it covered and in a cool space.

Once the timeline is past, your water is safe to drink.

4. Invest in a Reverse Osmosis System

Many homeowners will invest in a reverse osmosis system. While this may not be the cheapest option, it is the best way to guarantee your water is clean at all times.

RO systems are extremely common in locales that have high quantities of seawater.

5. Cloth Filtration

If you have a well or are camping somewhere with easy access to a well, this system will work best for you.

By placing a piece of plain (clean) cotton over a pot or bottle you’ll be able to filter the well water with ease. This will let the cotton catch any dirt or large debris that may be contained in the water.

This method is easiest for those who may have limited kit space during hikes or camping excursions.

6. UV Disinfection

A unique purification method that’s gaining popularity is UV disinfection.

UV water sterilizers rely on UV light to eliminate microorganisms that may be living in your water supply. Light flows at a certain wavelength, stopping organism growth immediately.

This is one of the safest and most effective ways to clean your water.
