What to Wear for a Presentation: A Basic Guide

Spread the love

Despite the fact that 77% of people have some fear of public speaking, people still have to make speeches and give presentations.

Giving a presentation has a lot of variables and preparations. When you have a well-defined and formed speech, it makes the presentation a lot easier!

But what about your appearance and how you dress when you give a presentation? The way you dress is just as important as the way you present.

If you’re stumped about what to wear for a presentation, here are a few tips!

1. Dress Better

Events in which you will be presenting will have an audience who will likely be dressed a certain way. You want to dress in the same way, but just a notch above. This is even suggested even when you’re presenting virtually

If you dress too far ahead you might appear unapproachable and unrelatable. However, if you dress similarly, but just a little bit better, you’ll seem relatable and understandable. In contrast, you don’t want to dress beneath them or you won’t be taken seriously.

2. Think About The Brand

What brand are you representing? What is the mission?

When you’re presenting for a certain brand, you want to dress the part to represent the brand and its mission well.

For example, if your presentation is in the technology industry, you probably wouldn’t go for a shirt or tie. You’d want to dress the part that’s similar to the technology industry so people can relate to what you’re presenting.

3. Movement

While it’s important for you to be comfortable, giving a presentation is also about movement. Even if you dress to impress, it’s important that you don’t feel too stiff or restricted by your clothing.

Find something that’s professional and represents the brand well, but also that you can have free range of motion.

4. Try it On

While you might be tempted to buy new clothes for your presentation, it’s actually not the best idea!

When you’re presenting, you don’t want to worry about tags or pieces that don’t fit, or that something isn’t as great on you as you thought. Unless you have time to wear the pieces, get a good feel for them, it’s best to avoid newer clothes.

You will likely feel confident and calm in something you already own.

5. Personalize

Professionalism is key during a presentation, but so is personalization! The audience wants to know that the person speaking to them is a human with their own thoughts, hobbies, and so forth.

You don’t have to go overboard, but following the guidelines, while adding a small personal touch will give your audience a feel for who you are. When people see a little bit of your personality, they have better reasons to trust you.
