6 Tried-and-Tested Tips for Moving House Fast

More than 31 million people move homes within the U.S. every year. The moving industry is immense. The average American moves more than 11 times during their lifetime and spends, on average, between $1,000 and $4,000.

A large percentage of these moves are corporate or military-related. You carry out at least half of these moves yourself — either as the homeowner or renter.

If you’re planning a move, here are six moving house tips to make your move efficient and cost-effective.

1. Arrange Utilities

Forgetting to cancel your utilities or arrange new contracts for your next address can leave you in an unfortunate situation. Paying for old utilities you aren’t using while not having water or heating in your new place isn’t ideal.

Make sure to cancel your utilities in your vacant home and set up new utilities as soon as you know the move is definite. The process isn’t more complicated than a few phone calls for a residential mover but can cost a lot more if forgotten.

2. Setting a Budget

Moving can be costly, and it is essential to know your budget before negotiating with a mover. Moving cost calculators can help you plan and save for the move. Moving costs are easier to handle when saved for in advance.

3. Find a Mover

The sooner you start searching for a moving company or planning it yourself, the lower a cost you can negotiate. Finding a mover or moving truck last minute can bring unexpected — and often unavoidable — costs. Make sure to request quotes from at least three different movers.

4. Packing

Packing can be the most challenging process of a move, usually because we have many more possessions than we think! Moving house packing tips can save you a lot of time and energy.

If you don’t need to disassemble drawers, you can pack your clothing in them and tape them shut for moving. Then, once in the new home, all you need to do is remove the tape!

5. Building a Puzzle

You can repeat this technique by packing small items like kitchen cutlery into pots or containers. Using soft items like towels to wrap fragile pieces like perfume or vases is another excellent tip. Ensure you cover liquid containers (such as soaps) with something plastic so that any spills don’t spoil other items.

6. Moving Day

Always make sure the packing is finished the day before the move; packing at the last minute can be stressful. To reduce the load, check if it’s possible to leave kids or pets with family and friends during the move to keep them safe and entertained. Don’t forget food and drinks for the move!
